This week’s blog post covers the 20+ Athleisure Trends to Look out for in the Summer of 2024. From sustainable materials to neon to functional accessories, this blog post has every summer trend covered!
This summer, you can expect to see some revivals from last year’s trends, new futuristic trends and some new pattern/print trends.
“During the next spring/summer 2024 season, the most winning silhouettes will be those that can be used from training to everyday activities with great style and practicality regardless of the occasion.”
Check out my previous guide to athleisure and 2023 trends for more knowledge on this subject! Here are the summer 2024 to look out for this year:
Trend #1: Sporty piece matched with opposite
This trend consists of pairing a sporty piece with its opposite fashion item. For instance, wearing a sweatshirt with a leather skirt or leather blouse with leggings.
“Think sweatshirts paired with patent leather (seen at Gucci) and slouchy athletic jackets atop handkerchief hem skirts (spotted at Louis Vuitton) (Bengel,2024).
This, in turn, creates a low effort aesthetic that most athleisure looks aim to embody.
“The sense of surprise and delight that comes with combining casual sporty silhouettes with their exact opposites lends itself to a certain purposefully effortless aesthetic (aka what all fashion people strive for) (Bengel,2024).”
Sweatshirt + Leather Skirt
Check out this trend on the runway. See how this aesthetic appears effortless, trendy and low maintenance.
Sporty Jacket + Flowy Skirt
The beauty here is in its simplicity! You can add a stiletto or sneaker to complete the look.
Strapless Top + Gym Shorts
“Long gym shorts are a quintessential cool-girl trend, but styling them with a strapless top somehow just made them cooler. This uncommon pairing is at the top of my “trends to try” list. To put my own stamp on the look, I would add in a simple tennis bracelet, a geometric bag, and a statement mule (Bengel,2024).”
Corset Top + Sweatpants
This one was my favorite on the list, look at how the silhouettes are opposites as well yet create a nice unified look.
“A bustier shape is guaranteed to make any stay-home pant going out-ready, and sweats are no exception. Let the lingerie-esque style take centerstage by keeping the rest of your selections simple, like a an oversized bomber, lady bag, and aviator shades (Bengel,2024).”
Trend #2: Sustainable fabrics and materials
This summer 2024 trend was seen last year. Basically, eco-friendly materials inclusive of organic cotton, recycled polyester and ocean plastics are being used to create some beautiful fashion pieces.
“In 2024, expect to see athleisure pieces made from eco-friendly materials like organic cotton, recycled polyester, and even innovative fabrics made from ocean plastic (hey honey,2024).”
“Manufacturers have incorporated sustainable fabrics into their activewear like organic cotton and recycled polyester, which drastically minimise the carbon footprint of their clothing. Consumers are more likely to shop somewhere that makes a conscious effort to reduce waste in their manufacturing process (hey honey,2024).”
Other materials like bamboo fibers are also popular this summer.
“Using recycled fabrics and organic materials such as organic cotton or bamboo fibers is becoming increasingly popular (hey honey,2024).”
Trend #3: Neon, bold and abstract colors
The third trend on this list is neon, bold and abstract colors. Think of neon green or the boldest hue of your favorite color to replicate this summer trend.
“From eye-catching leggings to bold sports bras, neon hues inject an instant dose of energy and vibrancy into your workout wardrobe. Embrace the electric allure of neon and make a bold style statement wherever you go (hey honey,2024).”
Trend #4: Tech-enhanced accessories
The next trend is tech-enhanced accessories, this can include smart watches built into a sporty wristband.
“Look out for pieces with built-in phone chargers, reflective details for safety during evening runs, and even smartwatches integrated into sporty wristbands (hey honey,2024).”
Trend #5: Tech inspired fashion and accessories
The next trend is inspired fashion and accessories. This is different than the previous tech-integrated fashion and focuses on futuristic and forward-looking designs and details.
The idea is of building a better-verse between brands, citizens and designers. This better-verse includes fashion that embodies a whimsical and dream-like aesthetic.
“Design into the utopia with products that portray a soothing side of tech with soft translucent layering and airy lightness uppers feel whimsical. Graphics have a soft defused, dreamlike quality. Gradients and color fades are key (lptgroup,2022).
It can also include smart tech that measures heart rate or fabric that ventilates and retains moisture during workouts.
“Integrated ventilation systems or moisture-wicking properties keep you pleasantly dry, even during intense training. In addition, more and more smart functions are being built into clothing, such as sensors for measuring heart rate or calories burned (lptgroup,2022).”
This trend can also include combining practicality and fashion such as integrating UV protection and sunglasses.
“From sporty backpacks with integrated hydration systems to stylish sunglasses with UV protection, these accessories make you look good and offer practical benefits (lptgroup,2022).”
Trend #6: Atypical visuals
A distorted reality is a trend to look out for with less unconventional designs and prints.
“As consumers reject the constructs of what normal looks like and the pressure put on them by society to be perfect. A new era emergies which showcases a distorted reality. Aim to turn design norms on their head. Make ubiquitous horizontal vertical. Create kaleidoscope or miss print graphics which show an alternate perspective (lptgroup,2022).”
Trend #7: Futuristic/virtual and artificial reality
Artificial reality and virtual reality are creating workouts that apparel companies are adapting their fashion to. From retro, bright colors to arcade-inspired, the aesthetic is not one to miss.
“Opt for arcade-inspired aesthetics with a softly retro vibe. Colours are designed to pop on-screen (lptgroup,2022).”
“Inspiration is drawn from the Teslasuit featuring full-body haptics that enable the wearer to “feel” the digital world, with real sensations that mimic those taking place on screen (lptgroup,2022).”
Trend #8: Cow Print
Cow print is in this summer, providing a playful and interesting touch to our athleisure wardrobes.
“Whether it’s a subtle accent or a head-to-toe statement piece, cow print activewear adds a playful and adventurous touch to your workout ensemble. From leggings to crop tops, channel your inner animal instinct with this fun and fearless trend (Gold, 2024).”
Trend #9: Ti-dye chic
Ti-dye is going to be in this summer, this trend was also popular last summer!
Trend #10: Florals
Florals are the next summer trend to look out for. You don’t want to miss adding this ethereal and feminine touch to your athleisure wardrobe!
Trend #11: Bodysuits
Light colored and pastel bodysuits, rompers and jumpsuits in particular are going to be in this summer.
“The combination of a comfortable fit, high-quality materials, and fashionable design makes bodysuits and jumpsuits a must-have in every sports wardrobe. And the best part is that you only need one piece for the complete sporty look (Moreno, 2023).”
This trend has been consistent with last year’s spring/summer athleisure trend.
Trend #12: Athleisure dresses
Athleisure dresses have been popular since last year and continue to be an athleisure trend to look out for.
“Look for dresses made from stretchy fabrics with sporty details like racerback designs, mesh inserts, or sweatshirt-inspired silhouettes. These dresses can be dressed up with heels or dressed down with sneakers for a versatile look (Moreno,2033).
Trend #13: Versatile Backpacks and Crossbody Bags
The next trend on this list is versatile backpacks and crossbody bags. They can be worn at the gym, while you are running errands or when you are grabbing coffee or lunch.
Trend #14: Gender-neutral athleisure
This trend includes inclusive fashion towards both genders as well as having equal representation of both men and women in the fitness/fashion industry.
“In 2024, we predict a rise in gender-neutral athleisure collections, providing inclusive and varied choices for everyone. This trend not only caters to consumers’ evolving preferences but also promotes a more inclusive and equal representation in the fashion industry (giathletics,2023.”
Trend #15: Bold colors and prints
Bold colors and prints are in, providing beautiful visual stimuli whilst dressed in athleisure.
“Combining vibrant colors and eye-catching patterns gives your outfit a fresh and dynamic look (giathletics,2023.”
Trend #16: Retro revival
Retro fashion is our 16th trend on the list with it’s 2024 revival.
“From tracksuits with eye-catching stripes to classic sneakers, the diverse selection allows you to create your individual retro look (giathletics,2023).
Trend #17: Abstract Patterns
Abstract patterns are a trend to look out for this coming summer.
Trend #18: Geometric shapes
Geometric shapes in tops, leggings/joggers/shorts or socks, sneakers and hats are in this summer!
Trend #19: Color blocks and contrasts
Contrasting two colors in an athleisure outfit is going to be in this summer.
Trend #20: Animal prints
Finally, animal prints inclusive of zebra, tiger or any animal you can think of is a 2024 summer trend that you don’t want to miss out on.
Buy those tiger striped leggings and pair them with a white, black or neutral sports bra and accessories for a stylish look this summer.

Bold colors and abstract prints for starters, and of course, sustainable fabrics. Oh and I love the athleisure dresses, those were my jam back in high school and I’m happy to find them again! What about you?
